Have you ever played a video game with a sanity meter?
(Pictured: Amnesia: The Dark Descent video game footage)
In these video games, the more things that happen to you, the more of a beating your psyche takes. The worse your mental health reading, the more hallucinations you have.
In Amnesia, the game the above gif is from, you lose sanity when you encounter monsters, and regain it when you make progress in the game.
I used to think this was the most ridiculous video game mechanic ever. How can you put a gauge on something like a person's sanity?
The older I get though, the more I feel like this mechanic is closer to real life than I thought. The more external stressors you have, the less capacity you have to deal with things that come up in life.
